Giovanni Francesco Bernardone; born 1181/1182 – October 3, 1226 was a friar and the founder of the Order of Friars
Minor, more commonly known as the Franciscans.
He is known as the patron saint of animals, the environment and Italy.
I'm using a fleece from a four horned Jacob sheep. Completed, he should measure about forty six or so inches tall.

I usually start with the torso but I want this figure to be sturdy on his feet so I'll begin there and work my way up.
I was pleased to learn that St. Francis was "Clad in a rough garment, barefoot, and, after the Evangelical precept, without
staff or scrip..."
After spending much time on his toes, I'd already decided that he would be barefoot.
Legend has it that St. Francis on his deathbed thanked his donkey for carrying and helping him throughout his life, and his
donkey wept.

An image having nothing to do with St. Francis or felting. This morning, I sat with my coffee and the figure placed
on books in front of me, thinking about scale. The sun came through the leaded glass behind me and this rainbow lasted
for just a few minutes.... Just enough time to get the camera, then it faded

jan 13 slowly, slowly
I'm building layers and and felting tightly.
... noticing;
I'm liking the colors and surface as they blend and regretting that it will be covered.
that's ok, by the time I reach the final surface, I should know exactly what I want.
He will be taller with the addition of a head
I'm hoping he is tall enough for this space I have planned.

and, a sort of hood, on his shoulders and back...
sandwiching the silk gauze between two layers of the brown Romney fleece did not work. ... too heavy, time to rethink the
robe. ...better without a robe...
